Parents and Carers are invited to attend a ten minute interview with their child's teacher between the times of 3.30pm and 6.30pm on the dates as follows.

Years 3 to 6 - Tuesday 17th March
Years 1 and 2 - Wednesday 18th March
Kindergarten -Thursday 19th March

If you would like an interview with your childs teacher please send back the notes that have been sent home and select your three preferred times. A confirmation note will be sent home with the time allocation.

Safe on Social Media Presentation

Parents are carers are invited a Cyber Safety Education Presentation on Thursday 12th March. This valuable information session is free of charge and will be held at Hastings Secondary College, Port Campus in Owen Port Macquarie starting at 7pm.

The Safe on Social Media presentation is a face-to-face presentation with a Q&A session delivering real life case studies and strategies to help parents support their children

This session has been developed with an appreciation of the complexities of parenting in the digital age, this interactive presentation will provide parents with realistic, digestible, and engaging cyber safety education.

The session provides practical content, filled with real-world and relevant information that can be implemented immediately to promote safer online environments for your children. There is plenty of time allocated for questions and answers so bring along your burning questions or scenarios you would like discussed.

The presenter Kirra Pendergast has over 27 years of experience in the Information Security and Business Consulting and has presented to more than 300,000 students, their parents and teachers. She will be joined with Senior Constable Steve Jeffery, Police Liaison Officer who will discuss with parents the law around social media.

Immunisation not only protects you and your family but also others in your community, by reducing the spread of preventable diseases.

Children starting school in 2020 must have up-to-date immunisations to enrol.

These vaccinations help protect children from highly infectious and severe diseases including whooping cough and measles.

Travel health

If you’re travelling overseas during the school holidays, you may need vaccinations or medication – both for general health protection and for region-specific diseases.

If you’re travelling to the Northern Hemisphere, you may even need a flu shot.

Library Stocktake

Thank you to everyone for utilising the library so effectively throughout 2019.

Our library borrowing will finish in Week 6 this term to prepare for an upcoming library stocktake. Please ensure all library books are returned to the library in Week 7.

Week 8, our library will be closed for stocktake.

It is really important that Year 6 students, in particular, return their library books in preparation for moving on to high school next year.

Overdue notices will be given out in the near future, to remind students and parents that these are the items that must be returned. Any questions or queries regarding this, please don’t hesitate to come and see our Teacher Librarian.

Bushfires are having a devastating impact on our State. Our school is currently operational, however we will have minimal supervision once again tomorrow, Wednesday 13th November and classes will not operate as usual.

The safety and wellbeing of our students and staff is our top priority. Please give strong consideration before sending students to school and exposing them to extremely high levels of air pollution.

If and when the situation changes we will communicate this as soon as we know. During this time, please take greatest care and precaution for your family.

NSW schools respond to bushfires

Many schools are responding to the catastrophic fire rating that is affecting communities across the state this week.

We are continuously updating the School safety page with a list of government and non-government schools, as well as TAFE NSW campuses that are currently non-operational.

While some schools are temporarily non-operational due to localised fires, many others in high-risk areas are non-operational as a precautionary measure.

Schools in some areas are being used as emergency evacuation centres at the direction of the Rural Fire Service.

For schools that are currently operational, school pickups and dropoffs will continue as usual. If your school is currently non-operational, it will likely remain so tomorrow.

Large scale distressing events affect our school communities in many ways. Headspace’s mental health support resource (PDF 100.52KB) is available to help students, teachers and school staff respond to the bushfires.

Kindergarten 2020 transition drop-in afternoons

Our Kinder Transition Drop-in afternoons is a great way for preschoolers to experience the school environment and to meet new friends.

Starting on Wednesday 23rd and Thursday 24th of November from 1-2.50pm. They will continue weekly on Wednesday and Thursday's and continue weekly until Thursday 5th December 2019.

Intensive Swimming Program

This swimming program is open to students who are unable to swim 25m in deep water confidently, unaided and with correct stroke. The program is aimed at students in Years 2 to 4 but students in Years 5 and 6 who have not reached satisfactory standard of water safety may participate.

Lessons will take place at Port Macquarie pool under the instruction of qualified teachers. The lessons will be for 2 weeks starting from Monday 11th November to Friday 22nd November. The cost is $68.00 for the two week program. This includes the cost of the bus to and from the pool and entry into the pool, lessons are free.

Students will need need their swimmers, rash shirt or t-shirt, goggles, towel, hat and sunscreen.

If you would like your child to participate, a permission note and money will need to be given to Miss Walton no later than Wednesday 6th November. Please note that there are only 60 places available and the note and money must be returned to secure your child's place in the program.

Safe on Social Media Parent and Community Free Info Evening

We have secured an opportunity for our parents and community to come and hear a guest speaker deliver practical solutions on how to keep the personal information of you and your family safe on social media.

We are pleased to provide a free event here at Westport Public School, in our school hall on the 22nd July 2019. Starting at 6:00pm and finished by 7:00pm Kirra Pendergast, who is the Director of Safe on Social Media Pty Ltd, is coming to talk to our school community about the Law, Information Security, and Privacy when using Social Media.

Kirra will offer unique solutions that combines cyber safety with information security and risk management skills so that we can all learn practical things that they can use in everyday life.

Westport Public School parents and families are being give the first option to take up the limited places available for this free presentation that will answer many questions and also refresh the thinking that exists around the use of social media.

Please fill in the expression of interest slip to secure your seat for Monday 22nd July 2019. All returns should be handed to Mr. Ainsworth by Friday 5th of July 2019.

There is no cost for this event. While we understand the need to secure child care, please be aware that this presentation will be directed towards an adult audience.

Dance Festival fun

Westport’s four dance groups had a fabulous time dancing at the Lower North Coast Dance Festival.

Creative and Active Kids vouchers now available

Creative kids can now put a $100 voucher towards extra-curricular creative activities outside of school.

Together with Active Kids, this program aims to encourage more NSW children to participate in a range of extra-curricular activities such as coding, languages, circus, performing arts and visual arts.

Parents can apply for one $100 voucher for each child enrolled in school on the Creative Kids website and use it towards the cost of registration, participation or tuition. You just redeem the voucher with a registered provider in your area when making your payment.

This is a great opportunity for your child to become involved in a range of activities that will build on their education, growth and development.

A day on the farm!

Stage 3 students are currently learning about sustainable farming practices as a part of their Science unit.

Our students had an amazing experience with their visit to Oxhill Organic Farm at Wauchope where they sent some of the day with farmer Chris and his family.

The students all had a great day learning about organic farming. They hand fed poddy calves, watched the milking take place, looked at the pregnant cows, saw the pigs and had fun running around trying to catch the chickens.

It was a great interavtive excursion with all students learning many things about organic farming.

The Game Changer Challenge is back

It’s not too late to become a Game Changer with applications for the Education Week challenge due by 7 June.

The Game Changer Challenge brings 16 teams from public schools across NSW – eight from primary and eight from secondary – to Sydney during Education Week in August for a three-day, intensive design-thinking workshop.

The Game Changer workshops, which start on Tuesday 6 August, includes teacher training in the use of design thinking as a teaching methodology and its application for school planning.

It also includes a team competition where schools will work under the guidance of experts from industry and academia to develop a solution to this year’s critical question: How might we humanise technology?

Department of Education Secretary Mark Scott has encouraged students and teachers to get behind the event as it highlights the critical thinking students will need to develop to succeed in the future.

“The Game Changer Challenge is an exciting initiative that helps educate and inform our students and teachers on how to integrate the problem-solving methodology of design thinking into the classroom,” Mr Scott says.

“It embraces the 21^st century skills our students will need to thrive in a globalised world such as collaboration, creative thinking and communication.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our students at all levels to be involved in discussing and addressing a real-world issue that will affect their future lives. I encourage every school to get involved.”

The challenge is designed to make strong learning and teaching connections to the NSW syllabus specifically in the area of developing general capabilities such as critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, communication and problem-solving.

The challenge also provides teachers with an opportunity to gain exposure to the design thinking process and includes teacher resources to introduce this creative problem-solving methodology into the classroom.

Finalists will be selected based on a 60-second video that showcases your team’s vision around the question of humanising technology.

Your NAPLAN questions answered

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a point in time assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. The tests assess the foundational skills in reading, writing, spelling and numeracy that are essential for every child to progress through school and life.

This year NAPLAN takes place between 14 and 16 May for paper tests and between 14 and 24 May for schools participating in NAPLAN Online.

NAPLAN data is used to help monitor student progress over time against a national measure and to identify areas of strength and improvement. It is used in combination with other school assessments to guide and support student learning.

Do you have a great idea to improve your area?

My Community Project is a new NSW Government funding program that is all about local ideas, local projects and local decisions.

You can apply now for grants from $20,000 - $200,000 for projects that will make a difference to your community. Projects could include new playground equipment, sports facilities, paths or ramps to improve access, public art or a community service.

The local community can vote for their favourite projects in July and successful projects will be announced in September.

Bring back memories, not measles

With school holidays just around the corner, it’s time to visit your doctor to check that you and your family are fully protected against measles, before you travel overseas.

Measles is a serious, highly contagious, viral illness that is easily spread through the air when an infectious person coughs, sneezes or breathes. If you and your family are not fully vaccinated, or have never been vaccinated, you are at risk of contracting measles.

Not sure if you’re fully protected?

In Australia, the measles vaccine (MMR) consists of 2 doses. If you’re not sure whether you’ve had 2 doses of the measles vaccine, visit your doctor. It’s safe to receive another dose.

Children born in Australia

If your children were born in Australia, they may have received the measles vaccine at 12 months old and the second dose at 18 months, in accordance with the National Immunisation Program.
If you have a baby under 12 months old, consult your doctor about getting their measles vaccination.

Adults born in Australia

Born before 1966 – you were most likely exposed to measles as a child and are generally considered to be immune. If in doubt, ask your GP.
Born between 1966 and 1994 – you may not have received 2 doses. Talk to your doctor about the free vaccine if you’re unsure.
Born after 1994 – the National Immunisation Program offers 2 doses, and you can check your vaccination status using the Australian Immunisation Register.

Elders Olympics

Nine of our Year 6 students participated in an excursion to Stuarts Park as volunteers. Their volunteer work consisted of helping the Elderly play games in the annual Aboriginal Elder Olympics held in Port Macquarie.

All students had fun and enjoyed spending quality time with Aboriginal Elders from across NSW state.

5 road safety tips for parents and carers

Now that students are back to school after a break it’s a good time to chat with your child about safe behaviours when you walk or commute to school.

Here are our top tips to help our students make a safe trip:

1. Be alert and aware

Take note of the dangers you come across on your walk and bring them to your child’s attention. Point out dangers, such as vehicles coming out of driveways. Talk to your child about being alert in a road environment.

2. Hold hands

When on the footpath, at a crossing or in a car park always hold your child's hand. It is advised to do this up to the age of at least 8 years old and closely supervise until at least the age of 10.

3. Choose a safe crossing

Lead by example and choose a safe place to cross the road. Explain why it is the safest place to cross.

4. Set a good example

Your child watches everything you do, so if you cross at the crossing they will too. It is also important to share these messages with other carers who may walk with your child to school.

5. Stop, Look, Listen, Think every time you cross the road

Discuss this important road safety message. STOP! one step back from the kerb. LOOK! continuously both ways. LISTEN! for the sounds of approaching traffic. THINK! whether it is safe to cross.

Practise makes perfect

The more supervised practice your child can get the better, so why not make Term 1 the start of a new routine to walk with your child to school more often.

Older children may be ready to make the journey to school independently. Before they take this step, observe if they are road safe and reinforce the road safety messages.

Ngioka Bunda-Heath visits Westport

Westport Primary School Stage 2 students have been fortunate to have Indigenous hip hop dancer and choreographer Ngioka Bunda-Heath teach a dance routine. The group are in the early stages of preparing dance that will be performed later in the year.

Ngioka Bunda-Heath is of the Birpai, Wakka Wakka and Nugi Peoples. She has trained in both traditional and contemporary forms of dance, the latter including Hip Hop. She was thrilled to take the opportunity of teaching and dancing with the students of Westport Public School, on her Paternal Country.

Uniform Shop Extra Opening Times

Our P&C will open the uniform shop for those wishing to purchase new school uniforms on Tuesday 29th January from 9am to 12noon.

Purchases made on the day will be cash only - any parents / carers who wish to pay via card need to do so via Flexischools before 23 January 2019 in order to collect clothing on 29 January.

Online orders submitted via Flexischools between 13th December and 23rd January will be available for collection on this day.

They will also be open on the first day of school for those wishing to purchase new school uniforms from 8.45am to 9.30am.

Russ the Storybus Visits Westport

As part of the Sydney Writers’ Festival ‘Russ the Storybus’ visited our school along with children’s book author Martine Murray. The students were amazed at 'Russ' and his brightly coloured outside, along with his inside decked out with shelves filled with amazing books to explore.

Martine, and Russ's wonderful helpers shared stories of the wonderful books that each child from Years 2 to 5 were able to take with them off the bus to take home. This is all part of trying to build a love and connection with books.

Martine also read one of her books 'Henrietta, The Greatest Go Getter' where she chose some wonderful students to act out the characters. She generously gave her time signing books and talking with our students.

Thankyou to Miss Kelly, our school Librarian for organising this wonderful day. It has been amazing seeing the students enjoying the love of stories. They had a great time relaxing and reading their new book that they can cherish for many years to come.

Like all NSW public schools, this week we will receive a School Budget Allocation Report with our funding for 2019. The report will help us manage our total budget delivered through the Resource Allocation Model (RAM).

The RAM supports schools through needs-based funding to ensure a fair, efficient and transparent allocation of funds. Our school has the flexibility to make local decisions based on the specific needs of our students.

We will use our 2019 funding to support students and improve educational outcomes. The school executive will continue to work with the school community as we implement the school plan using this needs-based funding.

World Teachers Day Awards

Teachers from across the Mid North Coast were honoured for their dedication and commitment at the 2018 World Teacher’s Day awards in Port Macquarie.

Our Rugby League team played extremely well in the NRL Rugby League 7’s competitive games. They played 4 rounds of games and came 4th in their pool which enabled them to play in the finals.

Westport played a tight game against Taree West and managed to win 2 tries to 1. Well Done!!

Winning this game has given them an automatic qualifier to play in the North NSW Rugby League 7s competitive competition in Coffs Harbour.

Patch Program Graduates

Westport PS was proud to congratulate our first graduates of the Parents as Teachers and Classroom Helpers course run during Terms 2 and 3. Three enthusiastic mums, Kara, Kelly and Heidi were presented with certificates to recognise their completion of the course, by our Principal Mr Tony Johnston, during a celebratory afternoon tea. All 3 ladies were very positive about the content of the sessions and the application of their new knowledge to students in class and their own children.

……..it made me aware of the different teaching techniques used today to allow a broad range of children to learn in different ways.

……..very informative and helpful in learning how my child learns.

……..I can now help teach my child better at home, to assist- not hinder-classroom teaching

…….the kids I worked with were an absolute pleasure and working with them in the patch program has also taught me other ways to encourage learning (different games etc) with my own son

Westport visits local Marine Discovery Centre

Westport Public School Stage 2 students enjoyed a day out of their classroom and went on a science excursion to the Marine Discovery Centre at Newman's College.

It was a very educational and fun experience for the students. They had an amazing time participating in a range of fun interactive activities. They had the opportunity to view their clown fish breeding program, discussed the impact plastics have on our environment and even touched the razor sharp teeth of a variety of shark species.

The Marine Discovery Centre is a great facility to have access to in our home town where we can all have a better understanding of the marine environment in which we live.

NAPLAN Online 2018

Westport Public School has been a part of a select group of schools across the state who are leaders in using technology.

Our Year 3 and Year 5 students completed NAPLAN Online, rather than the traditional paper tests. Students have found NAPLAN Online more engaging and far less stressful than the traditional paper tests. Results of this testing will be available to parents by the end of August.

Aussie Rules Footy Fun

Our AFL students enjoyed a day of footy fun and friendship at the Paul Kelly Cup, a state wide Aussie Rules competition using modified rules for children to learn the sport. For many of our students this was the first time they had played AFL, where they needed to bring their knowledge from other football codes to participate in this fast paced game.

The boys played 4 round robin games where they won three and lost one. In the finals, Westport played against St Joseph's Primary School only to be beaten by a goal.

Students should be extremely proud of their efforts on the day representing our school. They all displayed excellent sportsmanship and overall improved their knowledge and skills of the game.

Our students were also lucky enough to make it onto the NBN News.

Students Meet Mayor Peta Pinson

Port Macquarie Rotary West held a writing competition where students were asked to respond to the question, 'What would you change if you were mayor for the day?'

There were some outstanding ideas by our students and unfortunately only a few were selected by their class teachers as finalist. These winners were presented with a certificate from The Rotary Club Port Macquarie West Director Youth Services, Julie Constable, at our weekly assembly with Amarni and Erin being announced as the competitions winners.

These two students, along with Rae Venice attended a morning tea with the mayor, Peta Pinson at the Port Macquarie Council Chambers. Each of the students read their stories to the mayor and even had a chance to sit in her chair. Port News were also in attendance where they wrote an article about the morning.

Westport Public School has started strong this year winning the first Interschool Sydney Academy of Chess Challenge. Over 200 students from around the region visited our school to play in the Chess Challenge.

Congratulations to all our chess players who participated and helped our school achieve 1st place.

Although it was a very wet day students from years 3,4 5 and 6 participated in the NRL Rugby League Gala Day. Students enjoyed being out of the classroom and taking part in the non-competitive team sport.

Our students represented our school amazingly showing a great deal of team spirit and good sportmanship, with all teams winning multiple games. Great job everyone!

1st String Ensemble Lesson

Our students have the opportunity to learn a string instrument thanks to Mrs Eichler who has organised two String Ensemble Specialist from North Coast Alliance to come to our school.

Swimming Carnival Success

Our swimming carnival was a fun day for all competitive and non-competitive swimmers. Although we had a very wet start with a very heavy downpour, it soon dried up and we had a great day. It was fantastic to witness so many students trying their hardest to gain points for their house and everyone joined in on some great novelty activities. Thankyou to all students who participated and displayed excellent behaviour.

Marine Biologist Visits

University of NSW research scientist, Dr Tracy Ainsworth, spoke to Stage 3 students about pathways in Science and STEM based pursuits.

Tracy shared with the group her research on coral growth, as well as bacteria research designed to develop new medicines. The students all agreed that they came away with a clearer understanding of what scientists do and how they follow a STEM-based career pusuit through high school and into the workplace.

NSW Country Chess Champions

Westport Public School's Chess have won the NSW Junior Chess League Country title for the fourth time.

After winning their way through the northern part of the state, Westport met St Mary's, Dubbo in the country final on Saturday. Doug, Blair, Jack and Jarrod won 6.5 to 1.5 making them the NSW Country Champions. They then played the state final but were defeated by North Rocks Public School.

John, Jack and Blair also played in the NSW Junior Chess League One-Day Teams Championship on Sunday against 56 schools where they came 14th.

Their success at these tournaments has put Westport Public School in the top 10 chess playing schools in NSW.

Chess Team 2 wins away from Nationals

Westport's successful Chess team will defend their NSW Country Title on November 25.

They will play either Deniliquin Public School or St Mary's, Dubbo for the NSW Country Championship, with the winner then playing for the state title against North Rocks.

Tuqiri off to State

Tuqiri will compete in the NSW State Athletics Carnival in Sydney this week.

Last month at the Lower North Coast Zone Carnival held in Coffs Harbour, he blitzed the field in both the 100m and 200m races. 10 year old Tuqiri ran the 100m in a time of 10.48 seconds and hopes to run even faster in Sydney.

Each year during Book Week schools and libraries across Australia highlight the importance of reading and celebrate books and Australian authors and illustrators.

Hastings Secondary College Robot 6508 Visits Westport

Recently we had a visit from Hastings Secondary College with their amazing robot! We were treated to a very informative speech about the robot and the competition the school won. They then travelled to America and competed in a world-wide competition where they eventually came 26th. Our students were amazed at the ability the robot displayed. Crunch and Sip Launch

Westport Public School has proudly became a 'Crunch & Sip' school, a NSW Health Initiative to encourage students to eat healthy. Crunch&Sip is an easy way to encourage students to stay healthy. Students bring fruit and vegetables to school each day and are able to eat during the dedicated time whilst still working in class. Our guest speaker, Clinton from NSW Health presented our school with a sign and provided us with some fruit and vegetables.

Reconciliation Week Assembly 2017

Westport enjoyed a very special Reconciliation Assembly with the theme 'Let's Take the Next Steps'.

All students from Kindergarten to Year 6, painted a stone and these decorated the Stage in the hall. Aunty Marilyn explained to us that it is 50th the anniversary of the 1967 Referendum and 25 years since the Mabo Decision was handed down by the High Court of Australia. Guest speaker, Aunty Helen, shared an informative PowerPoint presentation with us about the meaning of Reconciliation, significant decisions from the past and some fantastic photos of our Aboriginal and non Aboriginal students working together.

Our Year 5 students also displayed what Reconciliation meant to them through their artwork.

Westport Students meet Ian Thorpe

What an awesome experience it was for our students who attended the local swimming pool to meet swimming legend Ian Thorpe. Students interacted with instructors and had fun in the pool learning new swimming skills. They also had the opportunity to ask Ian questions about his life and career and were surprised with a show bag of goodies from Optus including t-shirts which Ian was happy to sign for our students.

The Westport Public School Chess program has started 2017 with a tournament victory at in the Sydney Academy of Chess School Chess Challenge.

This follows on from our NSW Country Championship title in 2016, however with last year's stars now representing High Schools it was left to the next crop of Westport Champions to flatten all comers last Friday. Well done to John on his perfect day to win the individual title and to Jorja losing her last match to John for six out of seven to finish in second place. These two individual successes anchored the team's victory and qualified the team for the Semi finals.

Local author Patricia Young has generously donated her three Kensington Kitten books to the school library. She has also given sets of each book so that students will be able to read them in their classrooms.

My Kitchen Rules

Year 5 students across the Hastings Valley Community of Schools were invited to submit, in pairs, a recipe to cook in a My Kitchen Rules competition. Four pairs from Westport P.S. were chosen to compete along with students from Telegraph Point PS. The culinary battle took place last Tuesday at the Food Tech kitchens at Hastings Secondary College – Westport Campus. Charlie, Logan, Jorja, Kirra-Lee, Emily, Tamarra, Denver and Blair cooked up a storm with the assistance of their wonderful Year 10 mentors. Once their dishes were ready to serve, the students had to style their food attractively and the judges arrived to make their decision. All of their dishes tasted incredible! Congratulations to Jorja and Kirra- Lee for winning the challenge with their delicious and very spicy red curry chicken. It was a tough decision for the judges as Charlie and Logan created Lemon Slice Paradise; Denver and Blair cooked Pizza Scrolls and Emily and Tamarra concocted a Spider Milkshake.

Well done to the contestants and a huge thank you to the amazing staff and Year 10 Food Tech students of Hastings Secondary College – Westport Campus.

A Splendid Night

Splendour, Westport's annual performance night held last week, was a huge success.

The hall was filled to capacity and the audience were entertained by the Rio-themed night that included music, singing, dancing and drama. Students from all classes participated in class items as well as Junior and Senior Choir, Dance groups and the school band.

Both choirs gave an outstanding performance and received highly commended in their sections. We look forward to their next performance at Westport's Splendour on the 15th September.

Westport Girls Top of NSW Chess

The already overflowing trophy cabinet at Westport Public School has been further increased this week by the Girl's Chess team after placing second in NSW in the recent Girls State Chess Challenge held in Sydney last Thursday.

Emily (Yr 6), Grace-Anne ( Yr 6) and Chloe (Yr3) combined to outshine a host of highly fancied and skilled opponents from a raft of Sydney's most exclusive Public and Private Schools competing in this highly prestigious event.

The previously unheralded and largely unknown trio finished the competition winning a combined 11 boards from the 15 played, to be a mere half point behind the eventual winners. The competition was so fierce that the final result was only decided in the last minutes and final moves at the end of the days play.

This result is even more amazing given the three players have only started playing tournament chess and representing the school this year.

While the team has certainly exceeded all expectations and surprised the tournament chess fraternity at State level, their achievement can be attributed to a tireless work effort and a steadfast desire to succeed while constantly improving their skills and knowledge.

Westport celebrated Book Week with a parade, Book Fair and Dreaming stories.

Ned Kelly, a green sheep, a rainbow serpent and a hungry caterpillar were just a few of the characters at Westport on Tuesday when students and staff dressed as characters from Australian stories to celebrate Book Week. The Canteen provided a great Aussie sausage sizzle lunch as well trifle cups, lamingtons and fairy bread for students to enjoy.

Birpai elder Uncle John Heath told students some Dreaming stories and students were able to buy from the some great books from the Book Fair.

Reconciliation Week Assembly

Westport students and staff held an assembly last Monday to acknowledge Reconciliation Week.

Guest speaker, Uncle Bill O'Brien spoke about being respectful and understanding of the indigenous culture and fostering a stronger relationship throughout our community.

Some of our students performed "Bila Yii Maraliyn" which was sang in the local Gathang language with assistance from Debbs Robinson.

Parents and guests enjoyed morning tea in the Mingaletta Room at the conclusion of the assembly.

Rikki Mason from Bangarra Dance visits Westport

Some of our Westport students were lucky to meet Rikki Mason, who is a current dancer with the Bangarra Dance Theatre. Rikki is in town as part of Bangarra's regional tour. He came in to talk to students about all the sports he played growing up, how he became a dancer and what it is like to be a dancer with the Bangarra Dance Theatre.

Students were able to ask questions and see footage of Rikki and other dancers performing. Rikki travels the world performing and was on the TV show "So You Think You Can Dance" before joining Bangarra.

Now he performs worldwide celebrating and sharing Indigenous culture. We were very fortunate he took the time to come and talk to us. We thank Rikki for visiting and sharing a very important message – "That you can be anything you want to be, you just have to work hard".

Westport sing at the Opera House

Westport Senior Choir had a fantastic time in Sydney singing in the Festival of Choral Music at the Opera House. Our amazing students worked hard all year to learn eleven very technical songs to perform at the Opera House. Along with seven hundred other students from NSW Public Schools, our students performed to an audience of fourteen hundred people. To top this off our very own Casey Munn was one of three people to be interviewed about her experiences and did an amazing job. We are all very proud of our twenty five students who attended and how they performed on the night.

Kindergarten Drop-in afternoons

Westport Kindergarten Drop-in afternoons are fantastic for preschool children who are starting Kindergarten next year. The children are able to meet new friends and participate in a Kindergarten experience with great teachers.

The program is conducted each Thursday and Friday afternoon 1pm-3pm starting on Thursday 15th October and finishing on Friday 4th December.

Children participating will need to bring a hat, a drink and a snack.

Parents need to sign their child in at the office.

Westport visits National Capital

Our students visited many exciting venues and landmarks that Canberra has to offer including The National Museum of Australia, Deep Space Complex, National Zoo and Aquarium, Telstra Tower and Australian Institute of Sport.

A visit to Parliament House helped students gain a better understanding of our government system. They met our local Federal Member David Gillespie, who spoke to the students and answered question about our local area.

The visit to Questacon was a place of amazement. Learning about science in a fun, interactive environment left many wondering about the logic of it all.

They paid respect to the people who made sacrifices in wartime to benefit Australians when they visited the Australian War Memorial.

Students also paid a visit to Floriade, where they saw many beautiful flower displays and were very impressed with the many flower designs.

Telstra Tower was also a highlight when the students saw Canberra's night landscape. They also were fascinated in Canberra's Highest Posting Box.

By visiting Canberra students have discovered many interesting features of our capital city. They have gained a better understanding of how we are governed, how laws are made, Australian history, Science and so much more.

We had a wonderful turnout for our Kindergarten Orientation. Preschoolers enjoyed adventuring around the kinder classrooms. They listened to a story, enjoyed learning about our school technology and played fun activities. Students also enjoyed a sausage sizzle with their friends and families.

We look forward to seeing their smiley faces next year and at our Drop-in sessions on Thursday and Friday afternoons this term.

Westport Public School Senior Choir sang at the Official opening of the new Fire Station in Port Macquarie. They opened the ceremony singing the National Anthem. They also sang a song they will sing when they attend the Choral of Music Festival at the Sydney Opera House early next term. Much to everyones delight, one of our students was asked by the Minister of Emergency Services to help open the official curtain over the plaque. It was a great experience for all of our senior choir.

Our students and families have donated money to help people affected in the Nepal Earthquake. Students placed their coins in a coin chain to form the shape of the Nepali flag.

All money collected will be processed through the Red Cross Nepal Earthquake Appeal where it will be used to provide first-aid shelter and water for those affected.

Seven students from Westport attended the opening of the Brick by Brick Exhibition at the Port Macquarie Library last Friday.

Students were able to put their creative skills to the test using Lego to construct their own national capital buildings, bridges and attractions. The display was developed by The National Capital Authority as a way to tell Australians about Canberra. Visit the display at the Port Macquarie Library from 10am - 4:30pm Monday to Friday, until April 8th and use some of the 30,000 Lego bricks to build your own capital city.

Westport Public School were fortunate enough to host a visit from some of the West Tigers 1st Grade Rugby League Team. The players spoke to the students about the importance of healthy nutrition, physical fitness, playing team sports and how much fun people can get out of playing rugby league.

Students had the opportunity to win a prize from the players by answering one of their questions. The students also felt privileged when the players mingled with the students, shook hands and signed autographs.

November 11 is the anniversary of the Armistice which ended World War 1 and commemorates the loss of Australian lives in all wars, conflicts and peace keeping operations.

At 11am students and staff at Westport stopped to remember our fallen soldiers with a minutes silence. the Ode and the Last Post. Mr Sneddon and our school leaders represented our school and lay a wreath at the Remembrance Day Service on Town Green.

Twenty Westport students have been going to Port City Bowling Club each Thursday for sport.

When Westport students think bowling their first thought is usually cricket. While cricket is on offer this term, 20 students have been learning another bowling skill - lawn bowls. NSW lawn bowls coach Bryce Stewart, has been assisting students to learn the finer points of the game. Hensellite Australia kindly donated hats and drink bottles for students when they heard of our program.

Westport's Chess Team was nominated for the Junior Team of the Year category in the Sunrise Rotary Club's Hastings Sports Awards.

This is yet another honour awarded to our highly succesful chess team whose acheivements include:

2013 NSW Counrty One-day Champions,
Winner of Sydney Academy of Chess Regional semi final,
Winner of the Lower North Coast Sydney Academy of Chess local Qualifying tournament, and
North Coast Champions in NSW Junior Chess League Knockout.

While the top award for this category ultimately went to another group there is no denying this is the most succesful Primary school sporting program on the North Coast.

The team recently defeated Mullumbimby Public School to win the North Coast title of the NSW Junior Chess League Knockout Competiion. This places them in the final 5 schools in NSW in a competition that attracted over 1200 entries from all over the state.

Year five were lucky enough to spend an hour with the renowned children's author Colin Thompson on Wednesday.

Colin gave some interesting thoughts which shone a light on the creative process involved in being an author who not only writes but has also illustrated his own works.
The group were enthralled with Colin's stories and asked many insightful questions. Thanks to Virginia Cox from the Port Macquarie Library for organising this memorable afternoon with an author who has published 65 books in 22 years.

Mayor Peter Besseling made a guest appearance at the Hastings Valley Community of Schools Gifted and Talented Day (GATS) held at the Tacking Point Surf Life Saving Club on Wednesday.

Years 3 and 4 students from Westport, Tacking Point, Hastings, Port Macquarie, Wauchope and Telegraph Point Public Schools were involved in a day of activities to challenge their problem solving skills and creative skills in Science, Mathematics and English.

The day was organized and co-ordinated by head teacher of Science, Ian Mavin from Westport High School and Mrs. Sue MacGibbon, who teaches Maths at Port Macquarie High School. The teachers were assisted by six Year 10 volunteers from Westport High School.

Mrs. MacGibbon said that it was a great opportunity for students to work together with students from other schools.

" The day challenges them in problem solving and gives them a hands-on chance to work together as a team," Mrs. MacGibbon said. "It also differentiates their abilities. Some can be good at Maths while others can excel at English or Science. It's also good for their teachers to see what their students can achieve in the context of students from other schools."

The students and teachers gave Mr. Besseling a warm welcome when he dropped by after lunch, something he did last year as well. The Mayor stopped to talk with some of the groups and decided to get down to their level to communicate more effectively.

Both Mr. Mavin and Mrs. MacGibbon were very pleased with what the students achieved and were delighted with some of the creativity on display.

Westport was a sea of red on Wednesday to celebrate Book Week.

This year's Book Week theme is Connect to Reading and to celebrate, our well read school dressed in red for the day. Local authors Mitch Oxborough and Anne Winter read their book The Adventures of Fatty the Ratrod and students were able to sit in Fatty and sign her tray. Parents joined for students for lunch and the canteen provided an 'Eat Red' menu for the day. A Book Fair held in the library enabled students to purchase some great books to read at home.

Chess Champions do it again!

Competing against 18 schools from the North Coast, Northern Tablelands and Hunter Valley the Westport team of Lachlan, Travis, Marianne, William and Matthew won the Sydney Academy of Chess semi-finals held in Newcastle last week. In the individual event Lachlan was undefeated aginst 83 students winning all 7 games played. Finishing in second place was William who only lost one game and that was to Lachlan. The other players all finished in the top 10. The top 4 players combined for a total of 24 wins seeing Westport the winner of the team event. The team will now play the finals of this competition in Sydney.

Students in Stage 2 and 3 have been participating in Digi Ed's Claymation Digital Animation Workshops. Each class has spent a day creating their own movies from writing a story board, creating characters from plasticine, using stop-motion to film it, adding titles, credits and music, and finally burning their movie onto a DVD.

Last Thursday Westport hosted the Sydney Academy of Chess Inter-School Qualifier.

Playing against 72 students from 8 primary schools in the area, Westport students took 5 of the top 10 places and earned an invitation to the Northern Semi-final to be held in Term 3. The Secondary division was won by the Westport High team of past Westport Public students who had participated in our Chess program. Congratulations to the team and their coach Mr A for continuing the 13 year winning streak.

WOW! What a great experience it was for Westport Public School to be a part of the Port Macquarie Big Band Blast Festival.

Mr John Morrison, an Australian Jazz drummer and 3 bands gave Westport students a prelude to the Big Band Blast Festival. Some of our students played their instruments alongside Mr Morrison and were ecstatic that he was at our school.

5/6A joined thousands across the globe to participate in Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution day.

Friday was the third annual Food Revolution Day, a global fresh food initiative designed to help educate children about the importance of fresh food. Although Jamie wasn't at Westport, students in 5/6A were able to create a colourful rainbow salad wrap made with fresh ingredients following Jamie's instructions via the internet. They were just one of 7086 groups that participated from 121 countries.

Costa visits Westport

Landscape architect and television personality Costa Georgiadis spent time at Westport last term.

Costa entertained the school community at a special assembly where he talked about the importance of eating good fresh healthy food. He encouraged students to take responsibility for what they eat by knowing where their food comes from.

Westport won second prize for the scarecrow entered in the competition at the Lost Plot Community Garden in Central Road. Costa presented the school with its prize of a vertical garden which will be used to grow more food in the school's garden.

A group of students had the opportunity to work with Costa in the school's organic vegetable garden making a 'No Dig' (lasagne) patch. Lake Innes Lettuce and Herbs also came along with a trolley of seedlings which they helped the students plant. The garden is looking fantastic and students are keen to harvest and cook the produce.

Year 6 students enjoyed a GATS day at Port High on Wednesday.

They joined with students from Port Primary, Hastings, Tacking Point and Telegraph Point to participate in a variety of challenging hands on activities which included maths problem solving, engineering, visiting the ag plot, music and chemistry. It was a great day which showcased the opportunities available at Port Macquarie High School.

How does your garden grow?

EnviroMentors presented Schoolyard Harvest workshops to students last week.

Stage 2 and 3 were given an insight into the real cost of producing our food and considered the role of companion plants in creating a vegetable garden. Younger students learnt about the parts of a plant and were able to sow their very own snow pea shoots which they will soon be able to harvest.

What a Melon!

We have been reaping a great harvest from our school garden. A huge watermelon was picked last week and students participated in a "Guess the Weight" competition. There were many and varied guesses with Sachin having the closest to the correct weight of 5.55kg. Sachin and his family enjoyed this melon but others didn't miss out as students were able to taste other watermelons from the garden as part of the Move Eat Live Well program at recess on Thursdays.

What a fantastic day of chess! We had an excellent response of 19 teams from 6 schools competing for the privilege of playing in Sydney at the NSW Junior Chess League Country Primary Schools One Day Championships. Witnessed on the day were many fine and outstanding chess players. We will be watching out for in the coming months and years. However there can only be one winner and the Westport School has done it again.

Westport's Chess team won the Lower North Coast Chess Tournament. Westport has not been beaten since 2003, a 10 year reign! We also took out all top 8 placings except for fifth which went to Smithtown Public School. A brilliant effort by our chess teams and Mr Ainsworth their coach. Westport A Team - Liam Birrer, Travis Pascoe and Jackson Schofield will now go to Sydney to compete at the next level. Good Luck Boys!!!

Wow! What a night of excitement and entertainment! Westport's Splendour in the Hall was a night not to be missed. The school's hall was buzzing with excitement as it filled over 300 seats for family and friends to support the children of Westport. The variety of performances from Kindergarten to year six kept the audience enthralled and applauding for more.

The students were the highlight of the night as they demonstrated their talents across a variety of fields. There was singing, dancing, marimbas, the school band, didgeridoo, acting, comedy, Zumba, poetry, drumming, cup stacking, signing and so much more in the fun packed evening. The amazing talents of the students shone under the professional light and sound show that accompanied their performances. The costumes were dazzling and the props extravagant.

The evening really showcased the journey of learning these students have embarked on throughout the year. It also highlighted the dedication and expertise of teachers and staff at Westport Public School.

The International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS) conducted by the University of NSW provide the opportunity for our students to compete with talented students from all schools across Australia and some neighbouring countries. Each year Westport Public School students have achieved great results and this year was no exception! Students entered the Computer Skills, Science, Writing, Spelling, English and Mathematics competitions. Students from our school were awarded an impressive 10 credit awards, 2 distinction awards and 1 high distinction award. Wow! Did we steal the Show!! The Westport High School Creative and Performing Arts night was a great night had by all. Our Senior Choir rose above expectations in their performance and looked the part dressed in black with sparkling red and silver hats. A technical error during our second song forced our quick thinking choir into a cappella when the backing music failed. The audience were blown away with their ability to carry on! We nailed it!

Our Junior Choir, dressed ready for bed, brought many a laugh from the audience. They sang a medley of fun food songs including Bananas in Pyjamas, hence them being costumed in their favourite cosy pyjamas. They were definitely one of the crowd favourites!

Enrichment Maths Program

Westport Primary School Students have been challenged to be innovators and problem solvers who can design a process and can justify their findings.

Stage 3 students group are well into their project of finding the surface area of their skin. They are using a method which is able to prove their data. The biggest problem they have is how to store their proof and the age old problem of accurate data collection and retrieval.

Stage 2 students are moving from single session myth busting investigations into the more open ended, long term project of finding 'Abundant, Deficient and Perfect numbers'. This new investigation will test the teams and individual students knowledge of factorisation and addition as well as their tenacity and ability to work as a team to completed the mathematical brief.

Westport Primary School Chess teams attended the Interschool Chess Challenge at Forster, organised by the Sydney Academy of Chess. It was another resounding success for the new generation of Westport Chess Champions.

The individual section of the tournament resulted in Jackson Schofield winning with 8 out of 7 games in a countback from Liam Birrer also winning 6 out of 7 games. In third, was Lachlan Higham with 5 out of 7 games in a countback from Finn Soon. Those four players combined to win the teams trophy. Well Done Guys!!

Brock Larance, Jackson Schofield, Tori McCombe & Emma Pelepczuk.

School leaders at Westport are an integral component in supporting the wonderful sense of school spirit that exists within the school. Their key roles in and around the school and community foster the development of their leadership skills enabling them to lead the Student Representative Council providing support for all students from Kindergarten through to year 6. This solid leadership training gives school leaders the background they need to be effective role models and together with teacher support, help, with the smooth running of the school.

They support new students to the school, initiate changes collegially that benefit all students and represent the school at official functions within the school and local community with pride and distinction.

Welcome back for 2013

Welcome back to all Westport Public School Staff and Students for the 2013 school year. It was great to see so many enthusiastic and smiling children rolling into school this morning. We hope that everyone has enjoyed the school holiday period and are ready to embark on a year of learning at our great school. We'd particularly like to welcome those students starting Kindergarten in 2013 and those students who are new to our school.

Just a reminder that students from years 3-6 have the school swimming carnival this Friday, 1st February 2013. Warm weather has been predicted so please be sure to provide adequate sun protection for your child. Parents/carers and families are most welcome to attend the carnival to cheer on and support the children. Any offers of assistance to help the carnival run smoothly on the day would be appreciated. Permission notes providing more details for the carnival will be sent home with students on Wednesday.

Little Bookworms & 2012 Kindergarten Orientation Day

Little Bookworms to commence Thursday 9th August, 9.00am - 9.45am. Then every Thursday morning during terms 3 & 4. This is held in the school library.

A delightful literacy session presented by our talented teacher/librarian for all pre-schoolers! Mums, dads and grandparents welcome too!

All prospective Westport kindergarten students and their families are invited to attend our Orientation Day.

When: Friday, 12th October 2012

Time: 12:15pm to 1:30pm

Where: Students will visit a kindergarten classroom. Parents will attend an information session.

Following the meeting all families are invited to join in a free sausage sizzle with Kindergarten teachers, staff and students.

Our Uniform shop will also be open for your convenience.

Westport Public School - National Champions

Stage 3 students entered a problem solving competition conducted by the Belmont Court House as part of Law Week.

Students were provided a 'case' which they had to investigate. To do this they were required to read all the reports and statements (provided in stages to them over a three week period), and evaluate the evidence, nominate a suspect and present their case to an expert panel for judging. The investigation team consisted of five students, though all students in the class supported them throughout the case and in the production of their team's video evidence.

Westport nominated the correct suspect and were able to identify and illustrate all the evidence contained within the statements. Magistrate Allen found their presentation to be "very funny and significantly original, whilst detailing all the facts that would prove the case against Ben Dover. It showed thorough understanding of the significance of the evidence. Excellent use of pprops, not only for entertainment value, but as a valuable way of relaying a message."
